"When I saw the trailer for this movie I thought it was a joke, the cast was distracting and it felt like a movie that didn’t need to be made. I was actually really surprised watching it. The story is positioned in a very creative way that keeps you guessing despite being aware of the climax from the beginning. Highly recommend if you like period dramas. "
"Pretty solid period piece based off a true story told from different perspectives. "

"+ For those who, like myself, think that Gladiator misses a great opportunity for a deep period piece drama, this is their movie. The Last Duel is every bit as gritty and stylish as the former only here it focuses more on story than plot. There are brutal battle scenes, but oddly I felt that had they been removed the story would lose very little (if any) potency overall. Not only is the story engaging, but there is a nuance in how it is told based on which point-of-view the movie focuses on. It doesn't just have good performances, it has performances that are crafted in such a way that we get to see three different versions of three different characters without them losing the essence of who they are to the story. Of all the period pieces directed by Ridley Scott this one plays with the form of cinema the most. The Last Duel could have felt like three different vignettes making it a complete mess, but it actually keeps the main narrative thread in tact while giving us insights into the minds of the three main characters (though, the female character is the most credible of the three). It is also Jodie Comer who I think steals the movie. Her performance as Marguerite is one of my favorites in any movie I have ever seen. This movie has a great balance between a substantial story and stylish presentation.
- With respect to its structure, The Last Duel will work better on the second viewing. As it turns out its weakness is a low-key strength.
Final thoughts: From period pieces like The Duellists to Napoleon, this is Ridley Scott at his finest. The production is superb all around, the performances are fantastic (Jodi Comer is perfect), and the story is engaging in a way that plays with cinema form. It takes the focus off of plot without neglecting it. High praise for this one.

"Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, along with Nicole Holofcener, wrote the screenplay for The Last Duel. Damon and Affleck also star in the film, a biased casting & disappointing performance by both. Comer & Driver simply outshine their supporting actors. I would watch this movie again to observe the spoken & unspoken nuances between the nonlinear storytelling. The sequence of investigation feels similar to the chapters in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Long story short: worth the long watch."
