"This movie had just enough charm to keep me interested 😊. It’s predictable but still really #enjoyable. If you’re in the mood for a light, pleasant, #feelgood film with a gentle #romance and beautiful visuals, LONELY PLANET is perfect for a laid-back weekend. The backdrop of #Morocco adds to the whole escape vibe, making it feel like a getaway even if you’re just on your couch. There’s also an underlying theme of #loneliness, missed opportunities, and rediscovering yourself, which adds a bit of depth to this otherwise very simple story."
"3.25⭐️ Not a bad movie but as far as I’m concerned a missed opportunity. The setting and premise were the best things about it. Instead of following a more formulaic romcom (without the com) arc, this film would’ve worked much better as a more deeply complex and nuanced drama. It desperately wants us to believe it is, however it stays comfortable skimming along the surface, not diving in enough to fully explore the relationships, vulnerabilities and motivations of the characters. Which of course is how films succeed in getting audiences to identify with them. This doesn’t happen, and I couldn’t muster enough empathy for any of the problems of the three mains.
Obvious plot conveniences don’t help matters (Dern’s character, a smart, famous and prolific writer CANNOT be that stupid; and no, being an injured party does not redeem a boyfriend if he’s a sh*t boyfriend .. yes I said it lol). This extends to the ending, which was reduced to the simplest form possible ~ again lots of missed plot opportunities in building effective tension and more satisfying closure.
The chemistry did work for me though, the acting was fine, and I liked that a huge deal wasn’t made about the age difference. I admit it .. I liked looking at Liam Hemsworth, however really did not like his character. And while I appreciated Laura Dern I think I’d like to see an alternate version from girlfriend’s POV.
I’ll probably be in the minority in all this but still .. a hill I’d die on. Even though I did pretty much enjoy the overall vibe 🤨🙃🤷♀️ "
"This was cute! Every year I find myself being more and more receptive to sentimental romance movies. Lonely Planet shows how special it is to connect with someone who sees you for who you truly are.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Dern, Liam Hemsworth, and the writer/director Susannah Grant at the early NY screening of the film earlier this week. It was clear how passionate everyone involved was about this project!"
"Charming. Enjoyable. I finally enjoyed Liam Hemsworth’s charisma and acting."
