"4⭐️ Though it includes one scene of horrific domestic violence just in the beginning (which took me off guard and made me stop watching..eventually geared up and got back in), HERSELF isn’t as much an examination of DV as it is about the life changing power of just one person saying yes. This film is both hopeful and heartbreaking. A realistic depiction of what too many women and their children go through is mixed with a good bit of wish fulfillment which helps to lighten the heaviness. I loved hearing the message at the end in the old Irish term, “Meitheal”: When people come together to help each other, which then helps them in return.
