"I really wish that goodreads let us do half-star reviews. I debated a long time on how many stars to rate not only this book, but the other two as well. I went back and forth between two and three before I finally settled on three for each. About halfway through this book, I figured out my exact feelings for this series: I really like the idea and the overall plot. I really don't like the characters. I don't like the obsessive love, the crazy jealousy, the feeling that Emma belongs to Galen. It's all the gag-worthy crap I hated about the Twilight series, just with mermaids. However, once I'm able to choke that down, I like the mermaid angle, and I like the conflicts and struggles the characters encounter, as long as they stay away from the romance part of it. But, then again, I have to remind myself that this is targeted for "young adults," which is to say tweens. I don't know if I would have lapped the romance up when I was that age - I might have been too cynical even then. But I do know lots of girls of that age would - and do - love it. So, for what it is, it's not bad. I don't regret reading this series."
