Haruki Murakami
From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore: A magnificent coming-of-age story steeped in nostalgia, “a masterly novel” (The New York Times Book Review) blending the music, the mood, and the ethos that were the sixties with a young man’s hopeless and heroic first love. Now with a new introduction by the author. Toru, a serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. As Naoko retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman. Stunning and elegiac, Norwegian Wood first propelled Haruki Murakami into the forefront of the literary scene.

"I read my first Murakami book about 2 years ago and just got back to another, Norwegian Wood. Love the Beatles song that gave the book its name. This is a bit of a (for me) tortured tour though a coming of age saga impacted by mental illness and suicide(s). Tough material and worth some serious reflection. "
"Tbh I only read it bc Harry styles said he did. But I just coy don’t really understand what the story was really. Like I was just so confused. 2/10"

"I was absolutely enamored by this author’s writing style. The dialogue and the way he captures the sight & sound of a scene were so lovely it felt like a film. I read this as an e-book and found myself repeatedly screenshotting paragraphs because of their beauty. I think if you enjoyed Never Let Me Go by Kashuo Ishiguro and Beautiful World Where Are You by Sally Rooney you may enjoy Norwegian Wood. It was also somewhat reminiscent of The Secret History by Donna Tarte due to the lingering sense of existentialism and the collegiate setting. That being said, this story was rife with suicide and egregiously sexual. I recognize that could be a regional/cultural difference. I certainly believe that sex can contribute to plot/character development but this was near constant. I found the flippant regard for infidelity unsettling, and a particular scene involving a minor was very difficult to stomach. "
"Haruki Mirakami brings this coming of age story to life. John Chances is the narrator and a incredible at making each character come to life. While the story goes on somehow you personally become friends with the characters. It’s a easy, yet painful coming of age story not one that will be easily forgotten. It’s quite a long listen, but I promise you that you will not regret it. Norwegian Wood is a novel translated from the original Japanese, and like many of his books it’s amazing. "
"Holy misogyny, this book is chock full of manic pixie dream girls. It’s such an obvious male author wish fulfillment fantasy it’s actually insane that it’s regarded as such a cult classic. The male lead was so uninteresting and yet every single girl was head over heels for him. Not to mention, the fetishization of lesbians, pedophilia, and low key mental illness??? idk not for me"
