Shallow Hill is where souls suffer slow and miserable deaths. When River McAllister escaped from Shallow Hill, she left her innocence behind--and some of her sanity, too. Now she's rebuilding her life with her dream man and life couldn't be better.Ryan Fitzgerald is everything you'd want in a man. Attractive, rich, an aspiring lawyer, and would do anything to keep River. But that's not the only thing that attracts her. It's his attentiveness, his possessiveness... maybe not so much his temper. When her relationship takes a dark turn, Ryan's estranged brother, Mako, is the only one who sees it. He knows exactly what Ryan is capable of, and it's not the first time he had to be a knight in shining armor.River came from Shallow Hill, though. She's never needed saving before. What Mako doesn't see, is that River is perfectly capable of taking care of herself. The only one who should be scared is Ryan.

"This book was VERY hard to get through in the beginning (which I love, books that make you uncomfortable are just very well written imo) but man am I glad I finished it. River is a BADASS and I am OBSESSED with Mako! To all the people who put this book down halfway in, PICK IT BACK UP! I know it’s hard but the ending makes it all worth it I promise! One of my favorites for sure❤️🔥"
"I really enjoyed reading shallow River. The storyline kept me on my toes the entire time. There were so many twists and turns that left me gasping and squealing. What I will say though. Be sure to heed the warnings of the trigger warnings, this book is definitely not for someone that has a weak stomach or is faint of heart."

"Let me start off by saying this book is dark, twisted and full of triggers. The author is super upfront by her trigger warnings, so if you're sensitive to topics like abuse and rape, this book probably isn't for you.

I am going to preface this review by stating that I really did like this book. Was there parts that were hard to digest? Absolutely. I had a hard time putting it in on my "The-Spice-Shelf" and "Dark-Shelf" because of how gruesome the sexual assaults were (dark), but, I just couldn't pass up acknowledging the consensual scenes either (spice) because of how the author portrays how good consensual sex should be after being sexually assaulted, if that makes sense.

What I liked:
Mako. Mako is just dreamy. I LOVE clear communication, and this man delivers it well. He shows that communication is important in a relationship (and during intimacy), and that's just what women want, right? He's the bad boy, but not an actual bad boy, but still drips danger, but with good intentions. Like, that knife scene... IF YOU KNOW THEN YOU KNOW. He's lawful, but chaotic at the same time.

H.D. Carlton. F*****ck girl, you really know how to make my palms sweat and my stomach drop in pure dread. Obviously, this book is hard to read for the fact that it's about a woman consistently abused by horrible men in her life, and Carlton does not shy away from details. As difficult as it is, there's some type of awe when a storyteller can spin a story that makes you feel all these emotions with words -- to construct something so visual that you can feel it in your very bones - the good and the bad.

What I had a hard time with:
I'm going to feel like such an a**hole by saying this -- there was a point in this book where things felt stagnant and repetitive (around 30-ish%). It made it difficult to stay invested in the story, but I'm glad I did stick with it because around 50% things got interesting again.

Who the f*ck was the "devil" at the front door that gave her the girl scout cookies? Did I miss something, or did my brain make that part up? Because they never revisited that after or explain who that was.

Annnndd, there were some grammar issues. But, I'm not the grammar queen, so I feel like I don't have room to judge."
