No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same in this #1 New York Times bestselling series: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it… As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being with godlike powers. As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend a gathering of leaders from Atlanta’s supernatural factions. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered by a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear...

"You can never go wrong with Kate Daniels.

I absolutely love this series! This was a bit different than the other books but still good. I was never sure when the story was going to end and where the story was going. Kate’s relationship with Curran was still romantic and entertaining. There wasn’t a huge fight like her other books but there was still resolve at the end. I can’t wait to read the next. This felt more like a filler for me but a good filler."

"I love getting to see things from Julie's side. Finally getting a peek at not just what her magic does, but what Kate's magic looks like to her. While not essential to the Kate Daniels universe, it's a quick read that opens up a window into a different part of the world.

Merged review:

So much happens in this book. I loved this book and flew through it. I refused to put it down last night as I neared the end. I wish I had. There is so much that goes on in this book and I was up all night thinking about everything. About what happens, about what is in store for Kate and Curran and about the future of Atlanta. This book was a game changer. I'm not sure how Ilona and Gordon do it, but they keep making each book bigger and better than the last.

There are things I want to talk about, but spoilers! The ending. The. Ending. I can see how it came down to it. Do not read this next part if you have not read the book: <spoiler>The Pack Counsel has always stood between Curran and his mate. They have never really backed Kate, even she was putting her life on the line to save the pack. After all is said and done, they still blame Kate for just about anything that goes wrong. Curran leaving the pack was huge! But the pack's continual bashing of Kate made it easy for Curran to walk away. Hey, you twits! What made you think he'd choose you over the woman he loves who has never left his side? Plus when Roland can walk into the Keep, a well guarded fortress, without any problem and walk into Curran's quarters, no amount of shapeshifter guards will matter.</spoiler>. I had read something, and I was sure it was from Ilona, that this book was supposed to be the end of the Roland Arc. Nope. Ilona and Gordon just took it to eleven.

This showdown with Roland did not go the way I had imagined. I'm not sure what I had imagined, but I'm pretty sure Ilona and Gordon have it spot on. Kate isn't invincible, nor has she figured out everything she needs magically. She's still our flawed heroine, one who cares more than Voron ever wanted her to. She utilizes wit and sarcasm just as much as her sword, though she has competition. Can I just say pork sword? I giggled so much at that. This was everything I had wanted and more and I'm still loving this series. I never want it to end."
