"I listened to this as an audiobook, the fiddle does wonders for me. Putting myself in Laura’s family’s shoes, I would have been scared out of my mind with all the Native Americans passing by my house, taking what they wanted and not being able to communicate at all with them. And then almost getting burned by an out of control prairie fire?"
"Re-read this with my 7 year old daughter and was amazed at how moving it was. There is a sense of heart-breaking futility at the end: all that effort, all those dangers, and for what? <br/>The scenes with the Indians are chilling, both in their terror and the tragedy of the settlers' heartless outlook. A deceptively simple book with much to ponder for adults and children."
"I don’t think this is appropriate as a children’s book anymore. I think this should be reclassified as an adult historical fiction and period piece. I don’t think kids have the capacity to sort out the language and historical context from their present context, and as such, I think some harmful vocabulary and stereotypes will be introduced at too young an age (and thus normalized)."

"I have been baking literally all day with this playing in the background. Still a solid three star. If I can remember correctly, the next book has always been my favorite."

"Surprisingly political; I didn’t remember that aspect as a kid! The “Indians” content was eye opening in terms of understanding the Settler views of Indigenous people at the time. It opened up conversations with my four year old but also I questioned the appropriateness of the book for content to read to her given the racism inherent in the Settler views. I’ve chosen to use it as a way to talk about what ISN’T okay, but parents take note if you choose this one. Big Woods has significantly less of the racist content (minus one notable song Pa sings, easy to skip or explain as being unacceptable)."
