Daine’s magic must save her friends—both wolf and human—in this second book of the Immortals series, featuring an updated cover for longtime fans and fresh converts alike, and including an all-new afterword from Tamora Pierce. When Daine is summoned to help a pack of wolves—dear friends from her old village—she and Numair travel to Dunlath Valley to answer the call. But when they arrive, Daine is shocked to learn that it’s not only animals whose lives are threatened; people are in danger, too. Dunlath’s rulers have discovered black opals in their valley. They’re dead set on mining the opals and using the magic contained in the stones to overthrow King Jonathan. Even if it means irreversibly damaging the land—and killing their workers. Daine must master her wild magic in order to save both her animal friends and her human ones.

"Book 2 of Daine's series, and the 2nd series in the Tortall universe. Daine is now in training under Numair (Tortalls most powerful mage) & her power with animals and healing grow everyday. An old pack friend has called on her help, however it looks like the Badger god might be involved, which only spells trouble for Daine. This book introduces even more fantastical creatures and provides a humorous view into how animals view us two-leggers! Plus- Daine discovers a new power 🤫"
"The protector of the small series is my favorite its 4 books with the main character reminding me alot of brienne of tarts from game of thrones that would be perfect casting if it ever got a live action lol"

"Pros:

I love the little details on how it feels to move like an animal, what it’s like to see through their eyes and smell with their noses. The research into it must have been really interesting and I think is a great way to lead to younger readers going into more detailed research of their own on the animals they love.

Cons:

I do feel like the explanation why the main character doesn’t ask questions about her father when the Badger appears is a little too easy. She has a strong mind and having seen her hold her own against immortals it just seems strange but I suppose plausible since she wouldn’t actively protect against it."
