Perfect for readers of The Secret Life of Bees and The Help, a perceptive and searing look at Apartheid-era South Africa, told through one unique family brought together by tragedy.Life under Apartheid has created a secure future for Robin Conrad, a ten-year-old white girl living with her parents in 1970s Johannesburg. In the same nation but worlds apart, Beauty Mbali, a Xhosa woman in a rural village in the Bantu homeland of the Transkei, struggles to raise her children alone after her husband's death. Both lives have been built upon the division of race, and their meeting should never have occurred...until the Soweto Uprising, in which a protest by black students ignites racial conflict, alters the fault lines on which their society is built, and shatters their worlds when Robin’s parents are left dead and Beauty’s daughter goes missing. After Robin is sent to live with her loving but irresponsible aunt, Beauty is hired to care for Robin while continuing the search for her daughter. In Beauty, Robin finds the security and family that she craves, and the two forge an inextricable bond through their deep personal losses. But Robin knows that if Beauty finds her daughter, Robin could lose her new caretaker forever, so she makes a desperate decision with devastating consequences. Her quest to make amends and find redemption is a journey of self-discovery in which she learns the harsh truths of the society that once promised her protection. Told through Beauty and Robin's alternating perspectives, the interwoven narratives create a rich and complex tapestry of the emotions and tensions at the heart of Apartheid-era South Africa. Hum If You Don’t Know the Words is a beautifully rendered look at loss, racism, and the creation of family.

"Reading about serious topics makes me a little uncomfortable, so I can't say that this was a particularly enjoyable read, but Bianca Marais's writing made it much more bearable. The contrast in povs between Beauty(a middle-aged woman) and Robin(a nine-year old girl) were so prominent that I could differentiate between them almost effortlessly. Hum If You Don't Know The Words is a suspenseful, lyrical novel with themes of grief, love, and finding equality."
"Y'all, this book? 👌🏼 I'm only ¼ of the way through and so far it's itching to be one of my favorite historical fiction books. To Summarize:
- Apartheid South Africa
- Multiple Perspectives
- One of the perspectives is a young white child, who, unfortunately hears quite a few slurs, but is otherwise pretty naive and innocent. Marais does a great job portraying the pov of the young girl.
- The other a poor black South African woman travelling from a village of huts to a city, trying to find her daughter while grief, strife, and normalized racism are a part of her everyday endeavors.
- They both suffer greatly before meeting each other
- Definitely a least a little gorey
- Absolute page-turner, I have to know what happens next
- You're going to become invested in these protagonists so, so quickly.
- Every chapter adds a new layer of oh, dear.
- If I finish this book and hate it, you'll know my account's been hacked "
"I just couldn’t find a connective character. The story seemed lackluster of more than that… a story that was being told and you are just wondering when it ends. I took three months to drag through this only because I hardly if ever put down a book that I have begun. But I wanted many times to just stop reading all together. I know others have it rave reviews but for me it was just boring and did not hold my attention."
