From a fresh new voice with talent to burn comes this brash bitter sweet novel about Tracy Ellison, a young girl with knockout looks, slanted hazel eyes, tall hair, and attitude, as she comes of age during the hip-hop era. Motivated by the material life, Tracy, her friends, and the young men who will do anything to get next to them are plunged into a world of violence, gratuitous sex, and heartbreak. Slowly, Tracy begins to examine her life, her goals, and her sexuality—as she evolves from a Flyy Girl into a woman. A captivating tale, written with fluid narrative and contemporary dialect, Flyy Girl captures the complete feel and sounds of the streets and is destined to become an urban classic.

"Reading this book was definitely the black girl rite of passage when I was growing up. However, reading this as an adult was a much different experience than reading this as a teen. Back then, this was the hot and spicy read we were passing around and now it feels dull. Tracy was hardheaded and those hormones were working overtime! Tracy thought she knew everything and didn’t know a damn thing, typical teenager stuff. I did enjoy her character development and growth towards the end and I actually want to read the sequel, For The Love of Money. I wish we would’ve gotten more of her college years breezed through some of the teen years. I swear for half the book she was in 8th grade.

This book is undeniably an urban fiction classic and I would probably recommend it to ages 16-20. It might be a bit harder to get through if you’re 25+ though."
"I loved Tracee sooo much. I related to so much about her and I hate that we never saw this on the big screen. Classic novel! "

"This book should be required reading for every pubescent black girl growing up in or adjacent to the inner city! I’ve had multiple copies and I’ve given copies to every girl in my life who’s come after me! The discussions and lessons learned from this story have helped myself and the girls in my life navigate the difficulties that come with growing up black and curious in the inner city! Everyone won’t be able to relate but many will finish the book eyes open and ready to talk! #drama #black "
