Topic: Persuasion
What did you think of the new persuasion? Have you seen the 2007 version and/or read the book? I just finished the new one. I liked it as a movie but as an adaptation I thought it changed the heart of the story. The character of Anne Elliott was a very different person then her portrayal in the book. Also, in the book Anne and Wentworth barely talk to each other because they're love story has already happened and we are just seeing the end of it. Anyways, I want to know what other people thought

Jean CairoΒ I donβt like the language/vernacular update at all.

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β Yeah, it felt like they were trying to dumb it down for the viewer

Becky WoltΒ I don't even know there was a new one until now. The thing with Jane Austen is that her fans already know and understand the way she writes. So there shouldn't be any need to dumb it down.

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β I agree, I guess it was their attempt to appeal to a wider audience. Or maybe they were just inspired by Bridgerton.

Kimmy MeΒ @lily_hoyle I beleive this new version isn't true to the essence of the original piece. Just from seeing clips, I think the modern language is the greatest offense. A poor attempt at comedy imo that robs the viewer of that feeling of escapism and being immersed in another time. The 2007 version was a bit slow for me but I was able to appreciate the greater accuracy of Austen's work and how it stayed true to Anne's character.

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β @kimmy_me yeah the writing was what upset me the most too. Like the costumes and sets were gorgeous and so was the film making. But them trying to make it overly modern with the dialog was honestly jarring.

AmberΒ It was too modernized. "A 5 in London is a 10 in Bath" and "I never trust a 10" had me cringing, along with the Mary saying "I'm an empath" and Anne's "worse than exes, friends." Also, Anne was much too snarky.

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β Yeah Anne was very snarky. She acted nothing like the Anne from the book. Also a lot of the jokes were just her drinking a lot of wine. π¬

Jen AndΒ I did like this one but probably because ; 1. It made me laugh, 2. Henry Golding - part of me wanted him to be the Captain. 3. The Captain had cute expressions.....like when he walked in when she had jam on her face. I tend to turn to the version with Amanda Root. I saw another version that was probably the 2007 version and I liked it too but all that running at the end made me frustrated but it was still good. I have been accused of liking everything. I can see the "dumbing down."

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β Oh yes, I thought it all was performed very well. I really liked it as a movie. It's just that persuasion is one of my favorite Jane austen novels and the soul of it felt very different. Don't ever feel bad about liking everything. That's the way I am most of the time too. If it makes me smile then I'll probably like it. π

Lori MeyerΒ I loved the 2007 Persuasion! Maybe this new one will be more enjoyable if I don't compare. Although one if the reasons I love Austen is for the Regency language and manners etc. :)

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β The 2007 Persuasion is my favorite! Yeah, it's an enjoyable film as long as you don't go down the rabbit hole of comparing them like I have. π¬ Another one of my favorite Jane Austen adaptations is the 2007 Northanger Abbey, which if you haven't seen it you totally should. π

Lauren WeissΒ I liked it. Itβs not the most faithful adaptation, but it was still enjoyable to me. I felt like they were trying to do the Bridgerton thing where it looks like a period movie but has some more modern updates thrown in.

Kimmy MeΒ I'm a bit disappointed because I was looking forward to this new adaptation with better filming and scenic shots, but not at the expense of the story. Maybe it might be better to create new stories where there is no need to worry about sticking to the original book/characters...π€·ββοΈ Does anyone else feel like this? Why do you suppose Hollywood is set on recycling classics and novels only to change them? To me it feels like clickbait.

Lily π¦π¦π¦Β It definitely is easier to grab a viewer if they know what they're getting into. They have the big name to pull people in and they think that's enough.

Linda KellyΒ I love both 2007 and 1995 versions of persuasion. This film seemed like they were trying to turn it into Emma with the comedy. Well that isnβt persuasion.

Linda KellyΒ I didnβt have a problem with actors it was simply that they were trying to turn persuasion into Emma, which it is not!!!! The producers and directors must have wanted this. This was a mistake!!!
