Rebecca the Sparrow Okay it's been awhile but I believe that it was meant to be the victims of the mother's father (who was chased out of his hometown for it). Ted repressed the memories by keeping them in the attic but he knew about them because his mother told him the stories. Iirc the mother only ever did her experimenting on Ted himself (possibly animals ?) and the missing girl that Ted witnessed/repressed.

Betsy Putnam Thanks! Ok that’d make sense. Also it turned out the mother also might have been taking other boys, too. Ones that people wouldn’t care about. Police were searching for bodies at the end.

Maya Just finished the book! I think it was also referring to the other boys that his mother hurt. I think the forest was described a few times as "green" or "the green" (despite the white trees description, etc.) so it made me think that she likely was hurting them in the woods behind their house.
