Topic: Chainsaw Man
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about Chainsaw Man and I’ve got nobody to talk with about it. I legitimately think it’s the best anime to come out in the last five years or so. It’s perfectly-paced, has great characters, the animation is just 🤌🤌🤌, the EDs are all great, the OP is fantastic (love all the movie references), and they made changes from the manga that actually improved the experience. I just really love this show.

Brandon Reed Until literally a couple weeks ago, I thought Chainsaw Man was just another high-budget shonen, but it seems like everyone's NDA has finally expired and is suddenly talking about how mature and well-written it is.

Connor Veenstra 😆 Yeah, I get what you mean. But yeah, I think it’s very good. It has very human characters, even if they’re all chaotic to some degree, and the overall storytelling is incredible. Episode 8 in particular is damn near perfect, as far as I’m concerned.

Connor Veenstra Though I suppose I appreciate it more on a filmmaking level than I do a purely narrative one. It’s the first anime I’ve seen where they approached it as a tv show instead of a 1 to 1 adaptation of the manga and I really appreciate that. The visuals and pacing are all perfect for the format. The people talking about what a masterpiece it is are probably people who have read the rest of the manga (which I haven’t read, though I’ve heard it’s good).

Brandon Reed Humans tend to be chaotic, to some degree, lol.

Connor Veenstra I also really appreciate the changes to the character designs they made. The manga has a pretty rough art style that works in print, but would’ve looked horrible in motion. They cleaned up the designs so they look better when moving while still keeping them on-model. For example, in the manga everyone’s eyes have this weird vacancy to them, but in the anime they look more normal except for Makima and Power, which are kept the same for good reason. I appreciate that.
