WE LIVE IN TIME could have gone full surface level chick-flick and explored the plot from beginning to end in chronological order, but instead it aimed (and mostly succeeded) to paint a portrait of a life that is more accurate to how we as people tend to experience it. It is a non-linear spiral of key moments that lead the characters' understanding into how they derive meaning from their lives. It doesn't focus on the good or bad, but intertwines both to create a bittersweet narrative that made me feel as if I had experienced a romantic odyssey that is very rarely explored in this way (BLUE VALENTINE being a more downer version of this type of movie). Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are made for each other in this film. Without them, this would have been a generic romance instead of a captivating, touching love story.
+ Wonderful use of nonlinear narrative that illustrates how we as humans perceive our lives. It also gives equal weight to both of the lead characters instead of centering it on one more than the other. Fantastic lead performances by Garfield and Pugh, well paced and edited for the most part. Bittersweet instead of all bitter or all sweet. Also very humorous and touching overall.
- Sometimes it goes a little too deep into cheesy romantic waters. One scene in particular reminded me of the "You complete me" scene in Jerry Maguire, which took away from its deeper theme. It happened with one of the earlier timelines (the one with Pugh's bad wig) which tended to feel shallow and less fleshed out than the others.
+/- I loved that it explored a bigger idea, going more for the artistic expression than your run-of-the-mill formulaic romance. Having said that, because the scope is broader than other movies and isn't focused exclusively on feel-good moments or melodramatic trauma romance, it does run the risk of feeling like it isn't as defined as people might want it to be. Some timeline jumps may also be confusing."
"I thought this movie was so beautiful! It’s definitely one of those tear jerkers, so come prepared. "
