The ending comes crashing down too fast in my opinion. They should have just stayed loyal to the book's plot but understand why they tried to tie this to its predecessor."

"The Shining" is a tale of an everyman descending into madness and succumbing to the Overlook, while "Doctor Sleep" is a tale of redemption, friendship, and good triumphing over evil. It's a nice complete circle, and most importantly, Stephen King likes it. Stephen King was unhappy with "The Shining," and feels Kubrick got a lot wrong; "Doctor Sleep" pleases both Stephen King and the Kubrick fans, and I think that is a real accomplishment."

If you're not in the mood for a dark drama, then you'll either need to get yourself in that mindset, prepare to have a palate cleanser afterwards, or avoid it altogether. If you liked The Shining, then you'll want to adjust your expectations a bit. Much like how The Shining is about the fear of a father/husband seeing himself as a failure, Doctor Sleep is about a son comparing himself to his father's legacy and finding himself in similar pitfalls that he intended to avoid."

Now King is a superstar who wields far more influence over how his books are translated into movies. Thus the sequel’s director has to keep him happy. But he also wants to pay homage to the predecessor. The result is a mixed bag. Dr Sleep stays true to the novel while also sprinkling reminders of the first movie throughout. It’s a creepy story, that lacks the Kubrick punch. 4/5 stars."
