"🌟6.8🌟 GOOD, but not great, BUT ya gotta love the cast & the endearing, colorful characters AND that gratifying #shockingtwist of an ending! I was getting worried that the #mystery would never be solved & there’d be no #VENGEANCE for Abilene😅
What made this #fun for me was that the mystery was set in #TEXAS, so, of course it had your silly stereotypical “Texas bumpkin” characters with personalities “Bigger than Dallas!” 🤠😉 AT FIRST, they’re so over-the-top that they’re outright “caricatures” — BUT BY THE END, you (and Ben, the protagonist) get to know them & grow to love ‘em 🥰 … even “El Stupido” 😆 (and Ty & Grandma Carol made me lol)"
" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ wow I almost didn’t watch this one and for awhile I thought I was right. It seemed kinda bland and didn’t hold my interest until maybe halfway. But it perked up when Ashton Kutcher’s character entered the scene. His postmodern neo hippie philosophy spouting hipster guru retro cowboy really jerks your attention to the screen. But beyond that the movie takes a deeper left turn morphing from a cynical fish out of water kinda non-comedy comedy to..well something completely different..and left me in a sort of pondering state of disconcertment. I don’t know if the intent was to do a 180 or if they didn’t really know where they were going with it til they got there but I wish it had started out with some of that tone. It would’ve been a pretty brilliant film if so. "
"I almost bailed on this one in the first 10 minutes because the dialogue between BJ Novak's character and his friend is so annoying. But I hung in there and the story slowly started to suck me in and before I knew it, I was totally invested in the quirky characters of this family in a small Texas town. Not great, but definitely interesting, and a little bit surprising at the end. Overall, I dug it. 6.5/10"
"You think this is going to be one kind of movie, but writer/director/star B.J. Novak totally flips the script and it turns out so much better. There are too many abrupt tonal shifts that hinder an almost really good movie. But there are great performances all around, especially from Ashton Kutcher, that keep you very interested. "
"9/10 Wow, this was genuinely hilarious and profound. You don’t often see those two put together and done well. While I saw the twist coming, the way it was done was so satisfying and I think the real twist was the final message. This one should definitely leave you thinking and will alter your perspective on podcasts forever."
