The editor of Food & Wine touted this book - actually the series of three novels by Tara Dairman - as a way to inspire a young reader who loves food. I immediately ordered the first book for my precocious, foodie granddaughter. My gift note said “I can’t wait to hear all about this book.” Then I checked it out on Libby and read it myself so we could talk about it. Gladys Gatsby is my hero! New York’s toughest restaurant critic. (Just don’t tell anyone that she’s in sixth grade.) Gladys has been cooking gourmet dishes since the age of seven, only her fast-food-loving parents have no idea! Now she’s eleven, and after a crème brûlée accident (just a small fire), Gladys is cut off from the kitchen (and her allowance). Filled with adventure, intrigue, wonderful innuendo and metaphors this book made for delightful adult reading too! Favorite quote: It’s hard to keep the flames of your passion alive when you’re not allowed to light a burner at home.

Armor Towles is one of my absolute favorite authors. The Lincoln Highway did not disappoint! Such amazing characters, storytelling and eloquent descriptions. I expected a trip across country, instead I got a trip into personal discovery and understanding. A true definition of heros and acceptance of each of our Achilles heals. The characters you want to love are human, as are the characters you want to hate.
