"Why, oh why have people rated this so highly? I feel as if a decade has passed since I started the book, and in the end, the characters were unappealing. I made it to the end, and I am left with the question, why did I bother? The story started out well and then, over nearly 1000 pages, devolved into incoherent mumblings."

The character development is always what interests me and the story itself is just phenomenal, however, I found myself getting lost when Tartt goes into details with "art." It's just something I'm not familiar with."

"Must read the book before watching the movie. There’s so many details that the movie didn’t capture, and I feel much more appreciative of the book for it. Boris and Theo have a good friendship despite how self-destructive it is. They ruin themselves together, and are completely aware of the fact even if it took Theo longer to realize this. Also, The Idiot? The Idiot by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky? Федор Достоевский? Dostoevsky reference?"

Life isn’t pretty and tied up neatly with a bow. Bad things happen to people, and people do bad things, yet you can still recognize the flawed and wounded person inside all of it."

"This story is full of mystery but i have to admit the set tone was depressing. This was part of my office book club while it was a long and heavier read than usual, it was a triller. lots of twist, some of the plot leaves you hanging and wondering what became of characters along the way. overall good read."
