Andre Agassi
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Far more than a superb memoir about the highest levels of professional tennis, Open is the engrossing story of a remarkable life. • "Agassi’s memoir is just as entrancing as his tennis game.” —Time “Honest in a way that such books seldom are.” —The New York Times Andre Agassi had his life mapped out for him before he left the crib. Groomed to be a tennis champion by his moody and demanding father, by the age of twenty-two Agassi had won the first of his eight grand slams and achieved wealth, celebrity, and the game’s highest honors. But as he reveals in this searching autobiography, off the court he was often unhappy and confused, unfulfilled by his great achievements in a sport he had come to resent. Agassi writes candidly about his early success and his uncomfortable relationship with fame, his marriage to Brooke Shields, his growing interest in philanthropy, and—described in haunting, point-by-point detail—the highs and lows of his celebrated career.

"After spending my childhood in an all American household (Football, Basketball, and Baseball), it was ingrained in me (to my embarrassment) that Tennis was a "sissy" sport. After reading this book, I am not sure there is a sport that I have more respect and awe for.

Agassi writes a beautiful autobiography that focuses on the internal battles he faces starting with with his early childhood and continuing into his playing career. It is a common theme that money does not buy happiness but it is only Agassi's unique writing style and tell-all detail that really opens the reader up to the mind of a man who at the pinnacle of his success can barley will himself out of bed in the morning. In many instances, sports will serve as some sort of escape but for Agassi, tennis serves as the sole reason for his stress, pain, and fears as he chases perfection, an unattainable goal set out for him by his father. At times the reader is left bewildered, as it cannot be discerned what causes him more pain, losing a tennis match or playing in the first place.

It is only when he is able to break free from the grips of his father and focus on the goals that are intrinsic to him that Agassi is able to tap into his deepest gears. At this point, the reader is given a look into the mind of a master at their craft, a superhuman in many ways, someone who has consistently tormented his mind and body through practice and tribulation in a way that cannot be understood unless one goes their themselves. It is here that you gain an appreciation for the intellectual and physical prowess needed to succeed in tennis, as well as the immense humility and growing capable of the human spirit. Agassi highlights every thought and every fault in his character but it is this exact detail that allows him to take advantage of his opponents as he knows best the terror of self doubt and fear.

Seek and attack pain, find its roots, never hide. Stay relentlessly open to new experiences and opportunities. And most importantly stay open with yourself and your loved ones. You can never understand another human unless you can understand yourself.

An all time favorite read"
