"A stronger book than Part I yet equally disturbing. In Part II, we learn about Spiegelman’s time in concentration camps and death camps, his escapes from various pits of hell and the assortment of characters who save him and who betray him. The son, who relentlessly nags his dad for more and more about his time in Auschwitz, is a pill. As in Part I, all characters are animals: The Jews are mice, the German military leaders are nasty-looking cats, the local police and ne’er-do-wells are pigs, the Americans coming in to save people from concentration camps are Snoopy-like dogs, and a lone fortune teller is a praying mantis with antennae. The only thing I struggled with was the ending, which added a twist that left me wondering."
