On a damp October night, the body of young, beautiful Ashley Cordova is found in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. By all appearances her death is a suicide--but investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. Though much has been written about the dark and unsettling films of Ashley's father, Stanislas Cordova, very little is known about the man himself. As McGrath pieces together the mystery of Ashley's death, he is drawn deeper and deeper into the dark underbelly of New York City and the twisted world of Stanislas Cordova, and he begins to wonder--is he the next victim? In this novel, the dazzlingly inventive writer Marisha Pessl offers a breathtaking mystery that will hold you in suspense until the last page is turned.

"Vivid book, very interesting chase for the truth behind a larger than life character. Characters were fleshed out, story pulled me forward, as the protagonist goes in search of the real behind the fake, like his own form of tragic hero. Ending was the kind of ending the story's unseen focal point would create."
"I have never really read a book like this before. There was something about it I couldn't shake. It's just one of those stories that stays with you. I found myself thinking about it out of no where even a year later. The writing and the plot was so alluring and haunted almost like a dream. The atmosphere was dark and had a cult like feel. I just enjoyed everything about it. I was constantly in that state of mind where I was unsure of what was real.<br/><br/>The world building was top notch, playing like a movie in my head. The audiobook was very well done as well but the actual book has newspaper articles and pictures that make the experience more enjoyable. My favorite part was the end and how you had to make up your own mind on what you saw and experienced. It makes the book special to each person who reads it."
"Mixed media thriller with many layers were the truth slowly but surely unfolds. I loved the different elements like photos and newspaper articles to make the Story more real. It's also quite the easy read. Only thing that bothered me was the last 100 pages ... But I decided to forget about them 😅"
"Christopher Nolan meets David Fincher. I would love to see a film adaptation. "

"I read some of the reviews (as I always do) before deciding whether or not to purchase this book, and now that I've read the actual book, I don't understand how ANYone could give this book less than 5 stars. I'd give it more if I could. I decided that I was going to broaden my horizons by reading a mystery and I most certainly did. Now I wonder if any *other* mystery will live up to this one. Probably not. I don't think I'll sully my experience by running right out and buying another mystery. <br/><br/>This is my experience of reading this book and it's a sentence out of the book itself: 'Just when you think you've hit rock bottom, you realize you're on another trapdoor'. There's even an "app for that" so that you can delve even deeper! You HAVE to read the articles in the book, especially the infamous Rolling Stone interview at the end. They're what help make this book great. Pessl keeps her grip on you right to the very end. <br/><br/>In short, this book was 'Sovereign, Deadly, Perfect'. <br/><br/>"
