Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician, uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. Leonard is the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor.

"The acting in this film is so superb. Robin Williams and Robert de Niro are incredible as the doctor and patient respectively. The actors become the characters they are playing. They each give such amazing performances that you are drawn into the entire movie. This movie broke my heart in the sense that It was based on the true story of real people who experienced their mental and physical health returning, but because of budget cutbacks they couldn't continue to progress and come back to full health. I have never thought of the health industry as a whole in the same way ever again because of this movie. It really did change my life."

"Very intriguing! The fact that it is a true story both scares me and inspires me! The dedication of this particular doctor is something super special, and the acting was phenomenal. It’s so interesting that I’ve NEVER heard of this chronic condition before in my entire life and that it’s part of our HISTORY!! So please, watch this movie so you can not miss one of the most fascinating moments of the medical field! I will 100% be researching the story behind this film as I am left engrossed by what I have watched and with so much curiosity! Definitely recommend! Painful but surprisingly a morally beautiful ending. ❤️‍🩹"
