A small, seemingly innocuous plastic reel of film leads surveillance specialist Tom Welles down an increasingly dark and frightening path. With the help of the streetwise Max, he relentlessly follows a bizarre trail of evidence to determine the fate of a complete stranger. "This has got to be the grimiest film Joel Schumacher has directed; which can be mostly attributed to Andrew "Se7en" Walker's dark & gritty screenplay and cinematography by the great Robert Elswit. 8MM got mixed reviews when it was released, but i think it's aged quite well. It can be a little sentimental and sometimes silly, but it's a really solid and sleazy neo-noir thriller. Another stacked cast: Nic Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini, Peter Stormare, & Anthony Heald. Some fine early era Cage Rage, too. The last scene with Gandolfini is so g0ddamn chilling. The man was a treasure."
"Brilliant, unnerving, and uncompromising in its execution, its atmosphere, and the horrific subject matter of the plot, this is what I think of when Nicholas Cage’s most memorable movies comes to mind. His chemistry with Peter Stormage, the conclusion to the authenticity of the snuff film, and Peter Stormage COMMANDING total attention every time he’s onscreen as a deliciously hateable monster, it’s certainly not a movie for everyone but it’s intense and keeps you invested rewatch after rewatch. "
"Anyone else just love Joaquin Phoenix in this? I forgot he was in it!"
