" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is not one of those feel-good, go down easy sitcoms. I would classify it as a 30 minute family and social issues dramedy that deep dives into race, incarceration, fatherhood, and how it all intersects with emotional and psychological ramifications for the mc played by Kerry Washington. This part mostly focuses on her romantic life, or rather her inability to have a healthy one which got a little tedious for me but overall I thought it to be a pretty well done show. To be clear it is definitely for adults with one full frontal nudity scene and a ton of swearing throughout. I normally don’t mind that much but with inner child Kerry throwing out F bombs like that’s not a real 7 year old actor they have doing it, well it was a little cringy. Honestly I didn’t think that character worked well anyway, at least until her very last scene. The teen son was great though and I thought the show was best when exploring the family dynamics, issues around racial identity, and the impact of generational traumas. I even had a couple teary moments. This makes it all sound super serious but there are a lot of light moments and some laughs too. "
"Solid dramedy about family relationships and the effects of incarceration on families. It felt like much more of a character study drama than what usually passes for a half hour show, though there were moments of levity as well. Anything with two amazing leads like Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo will always be worth watching in my book."
