Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am. She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them. Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone. In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

"Lisa Jewell is a master of her craft. This book is no exception, loaded with twists and turns you just don’t expect. The story changes between happenings of 2 present day characters and 1 character in the 1980s-1990s. At first I felt a little lost, but the more I read and was able to differentiate between Libby and Lucy, I was fully immersed in this tale. Now that I’ve finished… I totally understand how readers were left wanting more and am so excited that Lisa Jewell has delivered the sequel in"
"3.75 stars.

This story very much gave me cult vibes in which a low life ensues physiological damage on children amongst other things. I was very impressed how much the Author delved into each of the kid's lives. So much so I almost thought that they were all clues to the past but in actuality you were getting to know the characters for who they were and of course a few clues a long the way too.

Even though I did enjoy the book along with the amazing character development I felt there was quite a bit missing. For instance you have back stories for the children but little to no backgound about the Adults who did this to them. So there was not a good enough reason behind what was happening and why.

The pace was very good. Small twist and turns began to pop up regularly towards the end. A slow and steady build to the last page which didn't necessarily fall flat but didn't have the impact I was waiting for. There was a twist don't misunderstand me but it was maybe too drawn out that it didn't knock my socks off.

I always enjoy when a story can put that small nagging at the back of my mind that something was off. The writing style was easy to keep up with and enjoyable as well. All around a good book I was a little disappointed because it was so close to being great."
