-- At least, that's what I thought. Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave. Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever. Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

"this was one of my moms favorite series. having just lost my mom, i wanted to read this as a way to feel close to her, see for myself why this book meant so much to her— and now it means even more to me.
i loved every second of this story. from the magic, to the all-too-relatable small town high school ridiculousness, to the very deep and raw emotions that come with grief over losing someone you love. there were times in the story i felt like i was reading about my own self (minus the spell casting and shape shifting environment) i felt so connected and related to the characters and their feelings and thoughts. to me this felt like a book that i will be taking lessons from and will stay in my mind forever. i just can’t say enough how deeply this book touched me and i see why my mom loved it so much, even getting “claim yourself “ tattooed. perhaps i enjoyed this even more given its sentiment to me, but regardless i think this was an incredible read. can’t wait to read the others!"
