"This book is a mind trip! It was so intense and I held my breath for like 95% of it. Buckle up for this review and fyi SPOILER ALERT! I knew going in that I couldn’t trust Theo as the fact that this is an unreliable narrator trope book was spoiled for me, so I went in already under the impression that Theo killed Gabriel. But the plot twist of Kathy’s affair not happening in present day and inevitably leading to the murder was jaw-dropping. I seriously didn’t see it coming. I was also totally convinced that Alicia was innocent and that Theo was going to end up being the guilty party, but the fact that she was the one to inevitably pull the trigger dumbfounded me. It made the symbolism of the Alcestis myth and painting 10x more poignant and it left me speechless. There were so many things about this book that were done exceedingly well, chief among them being the symbolism and the fact that Alicia and Theo were foils of each other. Side note: I love that the cover art alluded to where Alicia hid the diary. So smart! This book was an amazing ride and I highly encourage everyone to go read it!!!"
"Ugh I was so excited to finally read this book but it fell short for me. I think it is still a good novel- but there were so many side plots and unresolved moments, especially with Alicia's relationship to John Felix, her step-mother, and her brother in law. It seems as if these plots were put there for the sole purpose of trying to throw the reader off of the ending twist. Also, we never really understood why Theo stayed with his cheating wife all this time, only left to intuit that he was fixated on Alicia more than his problems with her, maybe as an outlet or something. But why?? There was a weird blurb of self-analysis at the end which seemed unwarranted/should have been hinted at earlier, especially since the entire story seemed to be told in retrospect. "
