"Book one was charming, I was engaged from the start. The end of book one was so disappointing. I really could have done without book two. I couldn’t comprehend how his father had just given up on life and followed someone so blindly. It just wasn’t very engaging, it’s hard to enjoy a story about someone so deplorable. Book three could have been its own book entirely. What a beautifully tragic story. But again, the ending left me with so many unanswered questions. "

"absolutely stunning writing. honestly it was so hard to get into but Yanagihara is such an amazing storyteller and I knew I would enjoy it in the end. I finished it on a flight and I was sobbing at the end, and it left me asking so many questions about our society. If you read to escape, this can go either way, really. I found that as much as it pushed me deeper into the lives of the characters & I became attached to them, I was also pushed into reality more and Book 3 was terrifyingly realistic"
