From the Hugo Award-winning author of Between Two Thorns comes the first novel in a captivating science fiction series where a secret withheld to protect humanity’s future may lead to its undoing…“Cathartic and transcendent.”—The New York Times“An exceptionally engaging novel that explores the complex relationship between mythology and science.”—The Washington PostRenata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi’s vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution, and war. Ren believed in that vision enough to give up everything to follow Suh-Mi into the unknown. More than twenty-two years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided, alone. All that time, Ren has worked hard as the colony's 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment, and harboring a devastating secret. Ren continues to perpetuate the lie forming the foundation of the colony for the good of her fellow colonists, despite the personal cost. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall, a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi. The truth Ren has concealed since planetfall can no longer be hidden. And its revelation might tear the colony apart...

"I hesitate to try to describe how intriguing, disturbing, insightful, and easy to read this book is. Newman manages to capture the true otherness of the alien while depicting with absolute clarity all that it means to be human. The present-tense and its occasional grammatical missteps could not sully the remarkable characters or the brain-tickling plot. I could not put this book down! And I had no idea where it was going until it got there - in all its glory. It has been a long time since I've read something this good.

*Adult themes, sexuality, violence."
"I fell in love with this book. It is the only book on audible I've listened to several times. The author, Emma Newman, narrates with a soothing, clear, and pleasant voice. Her writing is high quality and joy to hear if you care about writing style. The story itself is interesting but nothing over the top. The book is pretty melancholy but surprisingly, in a comforting way. As someone with anxiety, Emma Newman truly knows and describes so many feelings I've never had put into words before. I was hooked pretty early on but definitely give it a couple chapters to give it a shot. Thank you Emma Newman for your incredible talent. It feels like a hug in a book. "
"The main character is not likeable but the setting and situation were interesting and the narration well done. I enjoyed the descriptions of the world and the build up to the reveal of what happened which steadily picks apart the idyllic idea of what's first presented. I'm a little confused by some of the plant life/interactions mentioned as well. Overall, it was enjoyable but I'm not sure I'll continue the series."
"Good plot involving mental illness and a space colony. "
