NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition turns deadly in this “marvelously creepy thrill ride of a book that keeps twisting until the very end” (Karen M. McManus, author of One of Us Is Lying) “The suspenseful plot combines elements of Thomas Tryon’s classic Harvest Home, Netflix’s Squid Game, and the social commentary of Jordan Peele’s film oeuvre and mixes these with a revelatory pacing reminiscent of Spielberg’s Jaws.”—BooklistThe challenge: Spend a week hiding in an abandoned amusement park and don’t get caught. The prize: enough money to change everything.Even though everyone is desperate to win—to seize a dream future or escape a haunting past—Mack is sure she can beat her competitors. All she has to do is hide, and she’s an expert at that. It’s the reason she’s alive and her family isn’t.But as the people around her begin disappearing one by one, Mack realizes that this competition is even more sinister than she imagined, and that together might be the only way to survive.Fourteen competitors. Seven days. Everywhere to hide but nowhere to run.Come out, come out, wherever you are.

"First, I'll point out parts of various reviews that I didn't agree with.
Confusing
Predictable
Boring
Rushed pace
Slow
Hard to tell whose point of view you were reading
Hard to follow
Plot was everywhere
Too long of chapters
Laziest writing
Suspense was a letdown
Redundant
These are other readers' points of view, and we are all allowed that. I just didn't agree with any of these. It's also funny how contradicting some reviews were to other reviews. Examples: Slow but rushed pace? Confusing but predictable?
I did agree with one thing I read. I did get a bit irritated with the same thoughts being repeated over and over by the main protagonist. With the trauma she had endured, it made sense because I tend to repeat thoughts over and over that I just wish would be quiet and leave me in peace. The problem is, it's not fun reading about it. It didn't take anything away from the story, though.
I feel like the author was using this story as a commentary about some truly despicable traits our country (and the world) has regarding the rich and powerful using the less fortunate to be their puppets of abuse, telling themselves they're doing these lowlifes a favor. As a less fortunate, I could relate. And I was surprised no one else brought that up. This seemed to be a superficial read to them.
I took away stories of sadness, abuse, bitterness, trauma, abandonment, loneliness, regret, mind control, and shame. All of these people were sad whispers of who they could have been if they had been born to a better family or life had been kinder to them. There is also the story of healing, friendship, love, and finding out that you're worth more than you and others thought. Your worth isn't based on the money you have. These people found their worth. This is the story of not just surviving but learning how to live again and not just exist. I'm sad that so many readers missed out on this.
Read comments for the rest of my review."
"I liked this book, I think it could be a great movie. Cons- took a couple tries to start it, and some confusing long chapters. "

"I enjoyed my read through, the beginning was a bit slow and normally I don't mind, but it was a little hard to follow at times. I love multiple povs and getting to see the inside of characters' heads, but I feel it was done a little sloppily. It was occasionally hard to keep track of which characters head we were in, luckily it cleared up for the most part the further in you read so I still recommend it if the premise interests you! "
