Frank McCourt
A Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, Angela’s Ashes is Frank McCourt’s masterful memoir of his childhood in Ireland.“When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.” So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank’s mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank’s father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy—exasperating, irresponsible, and beguiling—does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father’s tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies. Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank’s survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig’s head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors—yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance, and remarkable forgiveness. Angela’s Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt’s astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic.

"An incredible memoir written by Frank McCourt...the book itself is very popular now and you can find it on many must read lists. At the time of its writing, it was very unique. It’s essentially just his story of how difficult his life was...and wow was it rough. It will certainly help you gain perspective and take stock of your own life and appreciate what you have. It’s all written very well and I believe it’s writing is why it won so many awards. It’s very much like a poem at times. For younger readers, this book would be similar to something like Hillbilly Elegy. "
"If you want a good cry as well as a few good laughs, all the while being drawn into the life of little Frankie growing up in Ireland then do yourself a favor and when you're done reading this amazing book make sure you immediately read 'Tis, the follow up novel. They are both must reads! "
"This book is unequivocally tragic and hilarious in equal measures. One feature that I wasn't expecting however, appeared in the final third of this memoir. And this was Frank's honest description of his sexual experiences. Which is something that I never think about, because it feels weird to contemplate. But it was a interesting reminder that previous generations have a lot in common with us. Even in regards to more taboo topics. #angelasanshes #frankmccourt #memoir "
"This book has made me better understand my own grandmother. Her family came from county cork but, the behaviors and attitude she had were so similar!"
