"This book had been on my TBR list for a while. I had read What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher at the beginning of this year (2023) and liked it very much. I finally came to read A House With Good Bones, because it ended up being my book club’s August pick- our very first as a group. There was maybe one or two aspects of the story that I wish the author had given more background to. Not because I felt the information that was given wasn’t enough, but rather I just wanted more; I liked the story well enough that I wish it had been longer with more depth. But as it is, it still works for me. I very much liked the humor sprinkled throughout the story- it was appropriate and well placed in a way that didn’t take anything away from the “vibe” of the circumstances. It made it more fun. (I may be biased as I am also the type of person who tends to crack wise to cope when things are otherwise dark, serious, or uncomfortable. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️😆 There was a minor romance happening that was just enough and not too much. I don’t feel it did anything to shift the focus away from the plot, nor the flow of the story. I also really appreciate that the description of the Main-Female-Character wasn’t the typical “young-hot-perfect” kind of MFC, in order to win the right to have said romantic affections as well as the reciprocated affections. It felt very ordinary and relate-able in the sense that this could have been just another day in the life of -it-could-be-anyone-, then BAM! Weirdness! Into the fantastical and creepy chaos we go! I wouldn’t say this book is super creepy, but I still found myself cringing and saying “Eww!” in all the right places. The way the author touches on generational cycles of trauma and the importance of breaking them, was admirable. Relate-able for myself and appreciated. [One of the supporting characters] Gail is my favorite!! 😂 I have a strange and new found fondness for vultures. 😃 For me, this book was a win."

" There’s something about the author’s style when she writes as T. Kingfisher that feels a lot like a mix of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, if a little bit more… quirky? Loony? In any case, it’s always a fun read."
