"I know it’s a beloved children’s book but the main good thing I have to say about this is that my four year old actually let me read her a novel.

It hasn’t aged well. This weird book is more of a series of vignettes than a plot, with a mouse of confusing age, only three female characters (a mother, and two brief love interests), and old-fashioned and odd phraseology that barely makes sense in 2023 at times. I write this review as a lover of Jane Austen and JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis and Charles Dickens so it’s not about it being an old book. Just an odd, frankly not very good, book."
