"for some reason the advertising on this film REALLY pushed me away from giving this movie a real chance. and wow, is most of it REALLY good. i was quite a lot like barney as a kid--a loner often at sea because my family wasn't structured around engaging in pop culture. at all. barney struggles with tone-deaf adults and realistic(!!!) health issues--i love how he both exploits them as an excuse and gets himself in real respiratory trouble in the same story.
i appreciated the very real sense of cultural identity in this movie. let me know if there's any other kids movies with balkan representation, maybe i'm wrong.
the emphasis on friendship and ideological associations is in some ways superior to Iron Giant, and i do not say that lightly, since Iron Giant is about as close to perfect as a movie can get. at it's strongest its better than both Mitchells vs the Machines (similar critiques of Big Tech and understanding of online communities, although RGW makes the exploitation of children by technology far more explicit) and Big Hero Six (robot companion bonding and emotional processing). Ron Goes Wrong doesn't quite stick the landing, but it's one of the most empathetic-while-still-being-hilarious films i've ever seen about this particular age group from a young Gen Z/older Gen Alpha perspective."
"Animated family comedy about a boy and his robot (a standin for social media-enabled smartphones). Explores some of the negative effects that social media can have on children, including how poor children end up without a place at the table due to their parents' inability to purchase the latest consumer tech. Includes comments on the importance of irl friendship, and what friendship really looks like. Genuinely heartwarming and funny. "
