"This movie was a victim of pedigree and expectations. If I had went in expecting decent, bloody action/crime b-movie, I probably would’ve come out with a positive view of it. However, this is Gareth Evans attempt to crossover to the mainstream with the follow up his groundbreaking Raid films. It is an English-language movie with stars and a big budget but it just underwhelms.
Forest Whitaker’s and Tim Olyphant’s characters might as well be named “generic corrupt mayor” and “generic corrupt cop”. I don’t expect deep back stories in action movies but they aren’t even given personalities. Both performers are so charismatic, it’s crazy that they didn’t give them something to do. Tom Hardy isn’t given much more to work with, other than he’s brooding and driven by guilt. The, mostly hand-held, action sequences are elaborate and bloody but not particularly memorable. I think using the older Western actors probably is why there is more splatter and less physicality to the action sequences. The plot is basically get feuding parties in one place, shoot-shoot-stab-stab, rinse and repeat.
I’m probably being too hard on it. The movie is completely watchable. If this had been a Scott Adkins flick, shot for $500k, I’d probably be recommending you to check out this dumb, crazy action movie. I was just hoping for so much more."
