The rebellious Thracian Spartacus, born and raised a slave, is sold to Gladiator trainer Batiatus. After weeks of being trained to kill for the arena, Spartacus turns on his owners and leads the other slaves in rebellion. As the rebels move from town to town, their numbers swell as escaped slaves join their ranks. Under the leadership of Spartacus, they make their way to southern Italy, where they will cross the sea and return to their homes.

"This is one of my favorite films. Kirk Douglas is passionate and athletic as the historical ex-gladiator Spartacus. He and his close friend, played by Tony Curtis, are wonderfully cast and suited for the roles that each play. Sir Laurence Oliver, Jean Simmons, and Peter Ustinov are incredible as the people in his life that either love or hate him. This film has the perfect mix of history, action, and romance; not too much of one, and just a little of the other. I believe that it still holds up to even modern standards of the swords and sandals genre s tion films."
