"This movie was waaaay too long, and the viewer feels every excruciating minute of it. There is the constant feeling that it is building towards something... something big, but it never gets there. Not until the very last minute of the movie. Finally his fears are proven to be justified but it is very anticlimactic. Even though the acting is well done by all involved. There is no payoff. Don't waste your time like I did.

"Okay admittedly I don't watch trailers and I don't really like to read the blurb of what the movie is about if I can I like to keep the movie a surprise so to speak. Anyhow I did not realize how intimate and unsettling this film would be. There are so much questions running through your mind during the duration of this film and having my daughter potentially having a connection with this film and a certain mental illness brought up with out spoiling too much leave me and my husband in a nerve wrecking position. Besutifully acted a little slow in the beginning and the ending does leave you with a slight frustration I recommend looking up interpretations of it online and you will kind of one this ahh moments "
"I very confused after watching this. Their was a lot I enjoyed. But overall I was more bored. The writing is great. And I did really enjoy the movie. But I guess it just feels to real maybe. Like I’m just watching people. It’s definitely not bad. It wasn’t the most entertaining thing I guess. I did watch it when barely awake don’t know if that mattered. "
"It was good n all but I hated, HATED how ***spoiler alert*** 2 hours was just on his dreams anf building this shelter along with family difficulties. This in my opinion should've been like 40 minutes, and the rest og the movie showing what happened after the storm. This is not a thriller!!! Maybe a mystery but NOT A THRILLER. "
"+ Take Shelter encompasses many elements that make it a powerhouse drama. It is psychological horror, but it is also a movie about family, intimacy, trust, and love. It explores the subjects of mental health and self doubt. It focuses on Curtis, who is a husband, and father of a daughter who has just become deaf. He suffers from a string of nightmares that involve an apocalyptic storm bringing rain that looks like thick oil and has an effect on people that make them go crazy. In one of the first scenes we see his dog maul his arm, and when he wakes from the nightmare, the pain stays with him the whole day. As his dreams get worse and turn into hallucinations in his waking life he starts to think these dreams are visions that will take place in the near future. As the movie continues we start to understand why he is reluctant to share with his wife what is happening. He soon starts to expand his tornado shelter, taking out loans without telling her, and putting his job at risk, affecting their medical insurance that would pay for his deaf daughter's procedure to help her hear again. What starts out as an eerie plot becomes a study in a character wrestling with himself, searching for the courage to be vulnerable and do what he thinks is best to protect his family. It nails the tone, creating a near perfect balance of mystery and intimacy, and features perfect performances by Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain (among other supporting roles). It's a small movie, yet the scale of the premise and musical nuance created by the score makes it feel big with an ambiance full of mystery so palpable it felt like I was breathing it in. This is an overlooked gem worth seeking out.
- Some emotional narrative beats are miscalculated, as with Curtis's best friend, and an encounter he has with his brother. They just don't seem completely thought out, but they don't hurt the movie.
Endnote: It is a SLOW burn, so make sure you have the appropriate attention span."
"Superb acting by Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain but the movie was a lot of build up without a real conclusive ending. I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t seen it but it’s one of those… is he having a mental breakdown or is he the only one that knows something situations. I would’ve liked it better if there were less build up and more of the resolution. It was still good nonetheless."
"To an outsider who hasn’t witnessed schizophrenia itself in anyone they’ve known, it just seems like an exhausting movie to watch, but as a person who has seen it first hand, it’s feels more devastating than I’d ever imagine.
Pretty good film, great acting, but it is quite long. If you’ve ever wanted to see in the perspective of a person with schizophrenia, this is good glimpse of what it’s like and please be patient with it. "
