Matt Bowen

This book/series is a bit of a "catch-all". It's got characters you root for, an engaging magical system, entertaining action, romance, politics. This is the type of book you could easily feel confident in recommending to just about anyone, not just fantasy enthusiasts. Also, this is a great jumping point into Brandon Sanderson's "The Cosmere", the universe that most of his fantasy books share.
