"3.5 stars for first two seasons, less for the others."

"Karate Kid is a classic & an icon to many of varying ages. They constantly tried to revamp this series & force Ralph Maccio to come back, but he knew to wait. When he read this script, he came back. That speaks volumes alone.
Now reviewing the entire show without revealing everything is gonna be hard, but here I go.
1st, the great thing about this is it doesn't throw away what the original movies accomplished. In fact, it honors them in unexpected & amazing ways that just kind of take your breath away.
Characters you want to return do, & even characters you don't expect to return do too. Plus, this show truly expands on all characters & their backstories. I adore learning more about them & seeing them in a deeper light. It's beyond clever.
I will say that every season honors each movie in certain ways. Yet they also expand this world & truly show how time moves forward no matter how much you may want it to stop. I'm constantly astonished by what it accomplishes & it still manages to remain realistic.
The one critique is of course that Mr. Miyagi can't come back. Yet they do wonders with that. They honor him & address his loss instead of covering it up like most revamps do. There are tons of moments that I want him to come in & save the day, but he can't. Sometimes tho, they make it work in unknown ways.
Now, the show isn't perfect. In fact, it's gonna frustrate you a few times. Yet those moments when it makes everything come together work too well to hate it.
Actually, it can be too realistic at times. Basically, it can show how frustrating the world is when it chooses to avoid the truth. But people don't want the truth a lot. They just want a story, & this shows that.
Finally, speaking completely out of bias here, Karate Kid 2 was my favorite & while honoring the 2nd one happens its not completely to my liking. Even if the ending of the 5th season truly helped matters. Granted I'm still a sucker for that sequel, so I'll always want more.
Still great."
"I ate this show up! Only having a simple understanding of the original Karate Kid (and no idea of sequels), the cast of familiar and new characters alike drew me in, as well as the well-integrated plot, that always builds to climactic showdowns! Worth it if have any interest in mixing that 80s nostalgia with the teenage challenges of today!"
