"This was another required read my senior year of high school. As tragic as it was, it was a phenomenal story that I think about often. I started watching The Handmaids Tale on Hulu recently & I found myself frequently thinking back to this novel while watching & pondering over the suffering of women and our roles/standards/pressures in society."
"I really liked this book. There were pages that took me to places I have daydreamed of before (the big white fluffy four poster bed, my own "little" home). Edna reminded me so much of me....her awakening was inspiring and beautiful. It is sad to think it was thought of as "scandalous" when this book was first written. I loved the strength of her character and her whims. And yes it was a book that made me sad at the end."
"I think this book was over-hyped for me as the epitome of early(ish) feminist literature. I expected a more blatant discussion of sex when referencing Edna's extramarital "affairs," but I see that being explicit wasn't quite the point. My biggest takeaway was the bravery of Edna's belief in putting herself first and refusing to sacrifice all that she is for her husband or her children. While the ending was upsetting, I had to ask myself what else could I expect. What could Edna's life moving forward look like? Would she seek out Robert after he left for the second time? Seek out Arobin even after realizing she loves Robert? And going back to settle with Leonce and her children is the antithesis of her titular awakening, so her final choice of suicide is understandable albeit devastating."
