"This movie marks the end of my tolerance for trans characters played by cis actors/actresses. It came out in 2016, the time most cis people started noticing that trans people could be valued, or at the very least might be considered attractive, and trans people started getting louder about representation. I am more tolerant than most when it comes to casting, because frankly I just want more stories out there. That said, if the movie seems to be milking trauma just for the audience, as this one did—not only with kind-of TERFy parents and grandparents withholding hormones from their teen (frankly I’m surprised his character didn’t turn to sketchy street hormones with the impatience)—but with poorly-handled beyond-the-pale daddy-drama issues, I get angry. Plus, since you know the actress playing this male character is cis, his struggle to get hormones is nothing but a tease, much like the character of Adam in Degrassi. It’s just not a fun movie for trans people to watch. And what’s the point of that when there are so few transgender films, period?"
"As a trans person, this was just...depressing. Putting aside the ill advised decision to hire a cis person for a trans character, my idea of trans rep would be having difficulties, but also living the life they deserve to live. There is so few movies and media with trans rep, I wanna have a good time watching just like any other movie. I wanna see a romcom or a feel good featuring a trans character being treated like how they should be. "
"It took me 3 generations to finish this god damn show"
