"This was a pretty funny and all together touching film. Abby and Harper were very sweet and had pretty good chemistry, though I don’t think that I would have been as forgiving as Abby after all the crap Harper put her through. I liked that the core of the film was all about how life is messy and how being a family is all about accepting and loving each other as we are, not what we wish we were. The moment at the end when Harper comes clean to her family (FINALLY) in particular sticks out as a moving moment. Mackenzie Davis was acting her butt off!"
"Obviously since it’s a Christmas romance movie for Hulu, it resolves a lot of its subject matter and character dilemmas in a more simplified way than reality ever would. It has its big monologues and sidesteps some of the serious sh*t of the third act in favor of a message of kindness and hopefulness, which means I’ll understand why some more cynical members of the queer community won’t completely vibe with it. I am not one of those people, I knew I loved this from the first 5 minutes. It feels like the queer rewriting of our own collective coming out experiences, which means I’ll happily give it a pass for moments of oversimplification. Life’s hard, coming out to your parents is difficult, being in a relationship that has moments that make you feel completely shoved to the side is one of the worst feelings in the world. It’s impossible to make something universal, especially for our community, but for all the faults it does have, watching it, I felt this rush of catharsis and emotion that had been building within me for the last month. It was devastation and happiness and an unleashing of tears for something not completely hopeless, it was a tribute and a testament to choosing to stay in love with someone, without abandoning the melancholy and difficulty that is inevitable for queer love to face. It is not perfect, it doesn’t have to be. What it is, is a cute Christmas movie that made me happy, made me cry, and made me remember how much I miss the people I love even more than I already did. It’s nice to watch a movie that feels perfect for the exact moment you saw it. I really needed this one."

"This has so many great examples of dysfunctional family dynamics which have major themes of narcissism, golden child, scapegoat, lost child, and other maladaptive familial characteristics. The main character is dating the golden child daughter in the family system. She experiences a hellacious time with the outward looking “picture perfect” family. SPOILERS after this point *************************************** The ending isn’t as true to reality, as most family systems like these would need lots of therapy, self-reflection, personal growth, and insight in order to change these dynamics, as it does not happen overnight. This is still such a great movie, however part of me wanted the main character and Aubrey Plaza’s character to get together."
