A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she'd spoken to God, Jeanne d'Arc is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.

"Put off watching this for many years as I don't tend to love silent films. I suppose you can call this a notable exception to that for a couple of reasons. The first being Maria Falconetti's performance, which is talked up by basically anyone who has seen the movie (and rightfully so). But the second is how the conflict is presented also how it positions its recount of things. There is no ambiguity here. The church officials were wrong and evil throughout.
There is something very timeless about a religious authority concluding that a 19 year old girl must be of the devil because she wears "men's clothes." I feel like I could see a similar conclusion reached if I picked the right megachurch pastor to listen to in a lecture about the youth of today. And it would be tough to spin the church officials as not being wrong and cruel in this instance."
"I loved seeing the story we didn’t learn in school about the first woman to go to war"
