+ Moneyball is a unique sports story that focuses on the people off of the baseball field. It doesn't hinge its payoff on tropes like 'winning the big game' or 'misfit players learning to respect each other'; the movie aims for a bigger narrative involving the foundational perceptions of how baseball chooses the players on the field in the first place. This sets it apart from other films in the sports genre, making the dramatic impact come from the people behind the scenes. It's smart and engaging in ways that not many sports movies are and entertaining for completely different reasons. The two main performances (of Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill) keep the movie afloat and the cast seems like one extended ensemble unit. It also ends on a wholesome, uplifting note that strikes a different emotional chord than other sports movies.
- The aesthetic of the movie sometimes appears bland, and because there aren't colorful, standout performances or engaging action in the portrayal of the game to contrast it, the movie can come across as generic at times. This took me out of certain sections even if it didn't make the overall story less unique and engaging. Also, because the movie doesn't focus or even try to include the bond of the teammates as they go through the game season, some subplots become oddly superfluous (such as one of the characters taking on a leadership role). I also had the advantage of not knowing about the events of the film before I watched it, so I appreciated it more as an exercise in dramatic storytelling based on real events. Others may find it harder to filter that out.
Overall: A smart, at times, sweet story that focuses on a different aspect of the sports movie with solid performances, although not as visually textural as other movies. Still, a high recommendation."
