"Quite enjoyable, despite a slow start. The main character D adds a little humor and moral complexity that keeps the story engaging. While the themes of moral ambiguity aren't entirely new, the unique storyline sets it apart from other superhero narratives like The Boys or Invincible. The animation is well done, and the sparse use of humor enhances the serious moments. Once the pacing picks up in the middle, it maintains good momentum."
"Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Takes some time to get going, but once it does (about four episodes in), it's an incredible speculative crime thriller and parody of/homage to tokusatsu shows. In the same vein as The Boys, it asks, "What if the heroes weren't really heroes? What might those who seek and attain international prominence as heroes actually be like?" They certainly wouldn't allow their role to become unneeded, and that's where we are in the status quo at the beginning of the show, with one of the "villains" absolutely sick of the farce.
The animation is crisp and dynamic. The colors are vibrant, as any Sentai show's should be. The Japanese voice acting is compelling. As I write this, there's no English dub to review. The styling, with on-screen character introductions, sells the feel and reminds me of earlier tokusatsu shows. Some characters' motivations and intentions are left delightfully murky. Fighter D, the main character, undergoes some interesting character growth especially in the last few episodes of Season One, with even his goals shifting.
I compare (and many others have compared) the premise of this show to The Boys, but I'll point out that this show does tend to be more serious in tone than that one, less madcap, less sexual, and less hyper-violent (though there are some bloody on-screen deaths). "
"This show feels hollow. I get the whole blurring the lines between friend and foe, good and evil, justice and betrayal -- but in this show they just feel like buzzwords. I don't think any of the characters are likeable or make very good decisions either which meant no one to root for in this situation. There is some action and nice animation, other than that -- there isn't much here. I finished it hoping it would pull itself together, but it just becomes more incoherent as it goes on. ⭐⭐"
