Piers Anthony
In this first novel of the Incarnations of Immortality, Piers Anthony combines a gripping story of romance and conflicting loyalties with a deeply moving examination of the meaning of life and death. This is a novel that will long linger in the reader's mind. Shooting Death was a mistake, as Zane soon discovered. For the man who killed the Incarnation of Death was immediately forced to assume the vacant position! Thereafter, he must speed over the world, riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. Zane was forced to accept his unwelcome task, despite the rules that seemed woefully unfair. But then he found himself being drawn into an evil plot of Satan. Already the prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved. He could see only one possible way to defeat the Father of Lies. It was unthinkable—but he had no other solution!

"I got the audiobook of On a Pale Horse and was pleasantly surprised to find George Guidall reading (he read thee Dark Tower Series excellently). It was a bedtime book, so it was nice to hear a good and familiar reader, but I think I only sort of liked On a Pale Horse because of the reader. Otherwise, I'm really not that fond of the author (and by extension the main character) listing away repetitively ad nauseum the stereotypical attributes of an "ideal woman." In fact, I thought it was a joke about how immature the protagonist was until I finished the book and the main female character, who was skilled, self sacrificing, and unwaveringly brave was damseled so utterly by the author for the heroism of a character who was basically naive and incompetent. It's like the Trinity/Neo crap in the Matrix. Oh, such and such prophecy blah blah. If Luna was in balance, they shoulda just taken her to be Thanatos since she's way cooler."
"It's a great book! I read it some time ago and it really got me thinking about the afterlife. Lost of interesting ideas and concepts in the book."

"From that series? I think the first is the best, but I like them all."
