J.R.R. Tolkien
The #1 New York Times BestsellerThe Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before The Hobbit. This mythopoetic masterpiece is a must-read before you watch The Lord of the Rings on Amazon.“Majestic! ... Readers of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings will find in The Silmarillion a cosmology to call their own, medieval romances, fierce fairy tales, and fiercer wars that ring with heraldic fury... It overwhelms the reader.”—TimeThe story of the creation of the world and of the First Age, this is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The three Silmarils were jewels created by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves. Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth.The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy.“A creation of singular beauty ... magnificent in its best moments.”—The Washington Post“Heart-lifting ... a work of power, eloquence and noble vision... Superb!”—The Wall Street Journal

"Extremely hard to get through but worth it if you’re invested enough in the lore/world "

"It’s ok kind of confusing at first thankfully I had someone explain it to me chapter by chapter or I would’ve been completely lost."

"There were many stories and parables that were entertaining and captivating, but the rest of the book read like the Bible and was a drag to get through."

"Yeah I’ve read the hobbit and started the Silmarillion (I’m not done with it yet but I like it). I also started the lord of the rings, but I actually lost my book for a while and I found it like a week ago 😂"

"Good while a bit confusing at times thankfully i had help getting this through to better understand what was going on. It's also interesting that this basically implies that the wizards are angels of some kind including Gandalf and Saruman."

"A wonderful, if slow and somber, look into the history of Middle-earth and the time before The Lord of the Rings"

"Very dry read, but fascinating to the Tolkien enthusiast. "

"I recommend reading this book along side the Atlas Of Middle-Earth to understand contextually where things are taking place. I feel like a lot of people have a hard time getting through this book because of the dense lore with no visual aid. Keeping in mind that within this incredible mythology lies great stories, lessons, tragedies and characters with multiple names. "

"Most people have told me that this book is hard to read, but i understood this book perfectly! I loved the beginning and I loved knowing how Middle earth was created, and how it got its shape. I liked the challenge, and it was a nice read! If you love Tolkien lore, this book is definitely the book to know more about his world and characters"
