"Every seven years, the Agon begins. During the Agon, nine Greek gods are made to walk the earth as mortals as a punishment for their last rebellion. These gods are hunted down by descendants of ancient bloodlines. If they kill the god, they get their power and their immortality. They get to become the new gods. In the last Agon, Lore Perseous left that brutal world behind. She left the possibility for eternal glory after her family was brutally murdered. For these past 7 years, Lore has pushed her need for revenge deep down as the person who once killed her family is now one of the new gods. The next hunt is beginning and two participants seek Lore out: Castor, a friend from her childhood that she thought to be dead, and Athena, one of the last original gods and she seems to be very wounded. The goddess, Athena, offers Lore a partnership against an enemy they both despise and a way that they can leave the hunt forever. Lores decision to both join the hunt and join the goddess will come at a deadly cost and it may not be enough to keep from destroying humanity. This book had a better middle and end than beginning. Although the storyline and storytelling was great, it was a lot to follow. There exists the names of the “old gods”, the “new gods”, and the names of each bloodline. It does get hard to follow as it puts alot of different people into the story and I found myself saying “who is that again?” The book uses the characters actual names and their god titles interchangeably so this was the hardest part about the book. Once you get past that, the characters have substance and growth. The setting is New York and is pretty unimaginative or unchanged in that matter. The book did have some twists and turns at the end that I didn’t necessarily see coming and it was interesting to see it unravel. This book does include a decent amount of Greek mythology just thrown in there so it definitely was cool hearing the stories and even the twists they put on the stories to fit the narrative. I enjoyed the idea of them fighting for honor because they descended from hero’s of Greek mythology like Jason, Herakles, Odysseus, Perseus, etc. so it gave their descendants a background story. Although I didn’t fully understand why the Greek gods were being punished, or how deep the rebellion was, it was a great story with Greek background that still displayed an entirely different story. "

"I haven't been doing a lot of reviews lately, but this one deserves a review. the storyline was a little wonk, but if your someone that really loves character depth, this book is amazing! The character backstories are, wow, completely justifies almost all the actions made by the characters and it all makes sense. The depth is there, you can really catch on to the feeling. And the plot twist is truly something else. That being said I need to just add, the ending was perfect. I've read a lot of books where the ending is a little iffy but it works perfectly. It doesn't end on any kind of cliffhanger that some standalone books end with and it doesn't make you feel betrayed, it's simple and easy to accept"

"Once every seven years certain Gods becoming mortal, mortals kill Gods to take their power, each God has a house to serve them, only certain descendents are allowed to kill new/old God's. Honestly even after finishing I'm still unclear on the rules. The beginning was just an enormous info dump. What made it most difficult for me was the fact I only have your basic knowledge of Greek mythology. <br/><br/>Even so this was an interesting plot with a trope I always enjoy where modern day meets the ancients. Although besides treating women like cattle and the use of ancient weapons I was hoping to see a bit more of it. There was a severe lack of world building even though set in New York. The map was a nice addition all the same.<br/><br/>Fryda Wolff did a fun job narrating. You could really feel the depth of emotion she put into it. Besides Van most of the other Characters fell flat. I found myself indifferent as to what was happening with them. Lore and Cas also was a bit too goody two shoes for my taste and annoying stoic. Even the Villain seemed one dimensional. Although the author did give out a nice size group of diverse characters.<br/><br/>While it was hard to follow the story it was easy to see the message the author was trying to exude. A humble boy dying if cancer becoming a God. Feminism and breaking the mold. Just not sure this story was for me. I was hoping for more ancient history meeting the here and now. Possibly more povs. And the added Greek monsters would have been exciting."

"This book blew me away. It was epic, and it was also a damn good epic. This blend of modern world and ancient Greece is woven so well, and the whole premise that families of ancient Greek heroes are trained for years and are fighting gods to become gods is such a cool and original idea. Great world and lore building, and great character design and development. Not a single second of this disappointed me."
