A young man with forbidden magic finds himself drawn into an ancient war against a dangerous enemy in book one of the Licanius Trilogy, the series that fans are heralding as the next Wheel of Time. As destiny calls, a journey begins. It has been twenty years since the godlike Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them -- the Gifted -- are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion's Four Tenets, vastly limiting their powers. As a Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden power of the Augurs, he and his friends Wirr and Asha set into motion a chain of events that will change everything. To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian's wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is. . . And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir. The Licanius Trilogy is a series readers will have a hard time putting down -- a relentless coming-of-age epic from the very first page. "Storytelling assurance rare for a debut . . . Fans of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson will find much to admire."" -- Guardian

"The Shadow of What Was Lost 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐
I really wanted to like this but it didn't take long for me to realize I didn't care for any of the characters. I almost DNF'd this multiple times, not only for the characters but I also didn't care for the (magic?) system and the big reveal at the end was very transparent. I also found the obscure made up names and titles were way too many and poorly explained I was lost so many times with who it was referring to, also, this was much too big for the story it was telling. I will not be continuing this series. "

"Reminded me very much of LOTR while still remaining unique. The names flow off the tongue and the characters are each on their own journeys in a world that transcends the limits of time. The forces at work continually grow in magnitude and there are many questions still floating around in my head. Can be confusing but in some sense I think that adds to the story. Bening the lava fanatic I am, the imagery in the end was particularly vivid. Everything twisted in the last 5 chapters and I'm anxious to see how it turns out in book 2."

"My favorite part is probably when Caeden finds out who he really is."

"Very fast paced, great characters, fun, and exciting. Similar to wheel of time in regards to characters/ villains. "

"This book is so good that saying any details about the story feels like a spoiler. It's a must read"

"4.5⭐️/5

Wow, I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. I’d heard this series was fairly basic and full of fantasy tropes, however it blew me away. I think the bright spot of this book comes from its plot which is so complex and grand in scale. Additionally, the magic system is so interesting which makes sense considering Islington said his inspiration for writing was Brandon Sanderson. There are minor flaws such as the characters feeling a little basic however those cons don’t come close to outweighing the pros.

Seeing how this book is considered the worst of the series by many, I’m so excited to read the next two books."

"One my favorite books. Wonderful brilliant, but you really can only appreciate the magnitude of this book once you finish the trilogy."
